The Training &
Certification Council of Transactional Analysts, Inc.
The T&C Council, located at the ITAA headquarters in
Oakland, CA is the main clearing house for information and services between the
Training Standards Committee, the Board of Certification, and ITAA members
involved in training. Its purpose is to create competent, thoroughly trained,
and ethical professionals: The council promotes and oversees competency-based
evaluation of transactional analysis professionals in all areas of application.
Competency Based Training
Individuals who are interested in developing expertise in
the application of transactional analysis in the fields of psychotherapy,
counseling, education, or organizational consultancy may enhance their skills
and performance by engaging in a transactional analysis training program.
In addition to didactic methods, transactional analysis
training frequently uses interactive group approaches to professional
supervision. Ongoing supervision in the use of transactional analysis includes
lecture, peer-group training, case presentations and discussions, diagnosis and
treatment planning, and often audio or videotape critique.
Personal Development
People in training can, if they so choose, achieve
considerable personal development. Training emphasizes resolution of personal
issues in the process of working with others.
Credentials
Professional credentials may be obtained for the application
of transactional analysis and for teaching and training others in transactional
analysis in four areas of specialization, at the present time. These are:
- Psychotherapy - the application of transactional
analysis in psychotherapy.
- Educational - the application of transactional
analysis to teaching and counseling in academic, family or community
education.
- Organizational - the application of transactional
analysis in organizational training, counseling and consulting.
- Counseling - the application of transactional
analysis in counseling and social fields.
International accreditation as a Certified Transactional
Analyst (CTA) is available to individuals who have received training and
supervision and passed written and oral examinations. They are then certified
by the Board of Certification as competent to practice transactional analysis
in their field of specialization. This process takes 3 - 5 years, depending on
time devoted.
International accreditation as a Certified Teaching and
Supervising Transactional Analyst (TSTA) is available to individuals who,
after becoming a CTA, have received additional training and supervision and
passed an oral examination. They are then certified as competent to teach
transactional analysis (instructor) and/or to supervise others in the
application of transactional analysis (supervisor). This process takes another
5 -7 years, depending on time devoted.
Training Contracts
Training in transactional analysis is a contracted process.
The trainer, who is selected by the trainee, must be a Teaching and Supervising
Transactional Analyst (a trainer who has passed the TSTA examination and is a
member of the ITAA) or a Certified Transactional Analyst with an active
training contract as a PTSTA (a provisional TSTA), who is under the supervision
of a Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst.
